    The estimated resident population of SA is 1,514,337 persons or 
      7.6 per cent of the total  Australian population

    The two main features of SA population are its concentration in 
      the area in or close to the capital city and its old age in comparison 
      with the population for the whole of Australia

Cancer in CALD communities 
    11% of SA’s population was born in North-Western (NW) Europe, 4.9% 
      in South-Eastern (SE) Europe and 2.9% in Asia
.
 
    By comparison, South Australian Cancer Registry (SACR) data show that 
      people born in NW Europe have 18.6% of all cancers, people born in 
      SE Europe 9.2% and people born in Asia 1.3%
.

Language spoken at home 

In 2006, English only was spoken at home by 1,262,781 people (83% of population).

This compares with 1,233,121 people (85%) in 2001 and 1,195,668 people (86%) in 1991.

In 2006, the three most common languages spoken at home other than English were Italian 35,816 (2.4%), Greek 25,898 (1.7%), and Vietnamese 13,763 (0.9%).

In 1991, the three most common languages other than English were Italian 48,719 (3.5%), Greek 29,853 (2.1%), and German 14,704 (1.1%).
 
In 2006, where a language other than English is spoken at home, 14,016 men and 18,726 women indicated that they spoke English 'not well or not at all'.
