Language spoken at home
In 2006, English only was spoken at home by 1,262,781 people (83% of population). This compares with 1,233,121 people (85%) in 2001 and 1,195,668 people (86%) in 1991. In 2006, the three most common languages spoken at home other than English were Italian 35,816 (2.4%), Greek 25,898 (1.7%), and Vietnamese 13,763 (0.9%). In 1991, the three most common languages other than English were Italian 48,719 (3.5%), Greek 29,853 (2.1%), and German 14,704 (1.1%). In 2006, where a language other than English is spoken at home, 14,016 men and 18,726 women indicated that they spoke English 'not well or not at all'.
