Dr James Cooper is a full-time general practitioner in the Hindmarsh and Hanson Medical Clinics. He has a background of research in immunology and molecular biology, with a PhD from the University of Adelaide and has held research fellowships at several universities including Harvard and Oxford. His research background includes studies on the cell biology of cancer.

Dr Cooper has interests in palliative care and was Chair of the Palliative Care Council of South Australia until October 2007. He is Chairman of the Research Committee of The Cancer Council SA and has been a Director of Coopers Brewery for 16 years.
