The fundraiser involves a run from Port Lincoln to Adelaide, where we will be encouraging the public, schools, football clubs and businesses to get involved and support us as we travel through many towns and meet thousands of people.

We will aim to finish at AAMI Stadium during and AFL match and conclude the fundraiser with our Kick for Cancer Ball.

My story

The reality of cancer was first introduced to me as a young boy. I watched my grandfather transform from a vibrant active man, to a frail person who resembled nothing of his former self.

His failure to recover, and the speed and severity of his deterioration, was explained to me by my mother, as cancer. Only one year later, the sickness and physical transformations hit again in my father. At this moment, I started thinking of ideas that could help my dad and others with cancer. I wanted to make a difference.

History of Kick for Cancer

“Kick for Cancer” is a project inspired by my observations as a thirteen year old boy. This idea became reality in 2002 with the help of a team of committed friends who also wanted to help support those with cancer and assist in finding a cure to beat this disease.

In 2002, we raised $51,341.37 for The Cancer Council (SA & Vic. branches) by kicking a football from AAMI Stadium, Adelaide to The MCG, Melbourne.

Throughout the journey, we raised the awareness of cancer and promoted good health by holding football clinics at regional primary schools and through media exposure. We raised monies through generous corporate sponsorship before the event, as well as donations through tin-rattling along the way.

We also held the Kick for Cancer ‘Holding the Ball’, which raised $15,000 and provided substantial exposure for our corporate sponsors.

The initial Kick for Cancer fundraiser was held three months after I was treated for a benign brain tumour. Since then, I have had a recurrence and successful treatment of a second tumour, which has amplified my desire to help and support those in need.

We all know the pain and suffering that people with cancer encounter, and the struggle and sadness that family and friends go through. In some way, cancer has affected every one of us.

We ask you to contribute to our fundraiser, which gives you the opportunity to support all those affected by cancer, and to make a difference for the fight against cancer.
