Peter Nelson Leukaemia Research Fellowship Fund - Application Details

Applications are invited for the Peter Nelson Leukaemia Research Senior Fellowship/ Fellowship in the fields of diagnosis, cause or treatment of leukaemia.

Mrs Marjorie Jackson-Nelson AC, CVO, MBE, with help from Rotary and a group of volunteers, has been raising funds for leukaemia research since 1977 following the death of her husband Peter Nelson, from leukaemia. The Peter Nelson Leukaemia Research Fellowship Fund is managed by a volunteer committee with support from The Cancer Council South Australia.



Eligibility:
 
The Senior Fellowship is intended to support persons who are established research workers, as assessed by qualifications, published works and reports and are seeking to consolidate a career in cancer research.

The Fellowship is intended to support suitably qualified persons who are less advanced in a career as a research worker.

The successful applicant, as either a Fellow or Senior Fellow will be expected to work, for the term of the Fellowship, in an appropriate South Australian institution.
 


Applications:

The application must include: -
  • A covering letter, addressing all the selection criteria (listed below)
  • Details of the proposed project
  • The applicant's CV addressing research experience, previous research grants and a list of recent publications and presentations. The names and contact details of three referees should be supplied.
  • Evidence should be provided that the applicant's Institutional Head is prepared to support the proposed project, and to state that it is compatible with the applicant's interests, capabilities and career development needs and to agree that all other conditions of employment other than those outlined below, will be met by the supporting institution.

 
Appointment:
 
Selection will be based on the applicant's research track record, the scientific merit and ethical acceptability of the research project and its relevance to research in leukaemia. An interview will be conducted with short listed applicants. The Peter Nelson Leukaemia Research Fellowship Fund reserves the right not to make an appointment.
 

 
Salary and Conditions:

The salary for both the Senior Fellow and Fellow will normally be within the range for equivalent research positions as specified from time to time by The Cancer Council South Australia .

The salary for the Senior Fellow will be within the range AUS$54,780 - $67,000 and for the Fellow within the range AUS$47,600 - $52,039 and depend on institutional practice, qualifications and post graduate experience.

The appointment will be for a period of three years, subject to satisfactory annual reports. The commencement date is negotiable.

An annual maintenance grant of AUS$25,000 per year will also be provided.

Other conditions of employment will be met by the supporting Institution.
 

 
Selection Criteria:

1. An established research career as demonstrated by:-

  • the number and quality of publications in refereed journals
  • presentations at National and International Scientific Meetings
  • referee reports
  • for the Research Fellow between one to five years post doctoral experience 
  • for Senior Fellows five or more years of post doctoral experience

2. Ability to plan, organise and execute research projects within a realistic time frame.

3. Adherence to the Joint NHMRC/AVCC Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research.

4. Conformity to the ethical standards of the NHMRC guidelines for animal and human experimentation and research with recombinant organisms and biohazardous substances.

5. The research proposal presented must relate directly to Leukaemia and have appropriate Ethics Committee approval.

6. Oral and written communication skills of high quality and the ability to explain to a lay audience the nature, relevance to Leukaemia and importance of the research proposal.

7. Capacity to act as an ambassador for the Peter Nelson Leukaemia Research Fund.
