CONDITIONS OF SCHOLARSHIP
1. The Cancer Council 2. No age limit governing eligibility is specified. 3. The Scholarship will be granted on the basis of merit of the applicant and the proposed program of research. 4. The PhD Scholarship will be tenable for three years from the date of commencement. Candidates may apply for an extension of the Scholarship, up to a maximum of six months. All applications for extension must be made through the scholarships secretariat of the relevant university, which would determine the validity of the request. The scholarships secretariat would then seek confirmation from The Cancer Council of South Australia that funding for the extension was approved. Such an extension will only be granted where it can be demonstrated that inability to complete the degree within three years is due to circumstances beyond the control of the student and related to his or her studies and not of a personal nature. Applications for extension must be made in writing to the relevant scholarships secretariat and be received no later than three months before the end of the award. 5. The total stipend in 2007 will be equivalent to the value of the stipend for an APA award, as determined by DEST (tax-free), and be indexed in line with DEST determinations over the three years of the scholarship. Other allowances, as prescribed by the Australian Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme, will be reimbursed on forwarding of receipts and appropriate justification to the relevant scholarships secretariat. The secretariat will determine whether the request meets the criteria for reimbursement, will reimburse the student and will then invoice The Cancer Council of South Australia for 50% of the costs. 6. The recipient of the Scholarship will be required to enrol full-time for the degree of PhD in the Faculty of Health Sciences at 7. The Scholarship must be taken up in the year in which it is awarded. 8. The Scholarship must be undertaken in an area of cancer control research, under the supervision of individuals approved by the relevant University for the purposes of the higher degree candidature. 9. Approval of the proposed research program that the recipient of the Scholarship will undertake, by the Head of the Department of the relevant University, is a requirement for admission to the degree of PhD. This approval must accompany the application for the award. The proposed research program must fulfil the requirements for a higher degree by research in the University at which the student is enrolled. 10. The recipient may apply and accept other awards while in receipt of this Scholarship, subject to the approval of The Cancer Council South Australia’s Cancer Research Advisory Committee and the scholarships secretariat of the University at which the student is enrolled. The Cancer Council South Australia reserves the right to withdraw funding if the student accepts another award which conflicts with its mission and purpose. 11. If the work of the recipient of the Scholarship is interrupted for a period of time, The Cancer Council South Australia’s Cancer Research Advisory Committee may grant an intermission to tenure of the award, upon receipt of an application to this effect. This application also would need to be approved by the enrolling institution. 12. The recipient of the Scholarship is entitled to 20 days leave a year, calculated on a pro-rata basis. Leave may be accrued over the period of tenure but must be taken during the period of tenure and leave not taken will be forfeited. Other entitlements would include:

The University at which the student is enrolled may review the progress of the recipient of the Scholarship at any time and, if progress is unsatisfactory, may recommend termination of the Scholarship, as prescribed by the relevant University Policy. 15. At the conclusion of the Scholarship, or at any other time as determined by The Cancer Council South Australia, the holder of the Scholarship will be required to provide a report of approximately 1,000 words to The Cancer Council South Australia outlining the progress in the research carried out by the recipient during the period of the Scholarship. 16. The holder of the Scholarship may be required to contribute to any promotional activity relating to the Scholarship or the research topic of the Scholarship as requested by The Cancer Council South Australia. Such activity may include presentations at community forums or contributing to community publications. In addition, The Cancer Council South Australia and the University must be acknowledged in any publications resulting from the work and The Cancer Council South Australia also must be acknowledged in the thesis. 17. Following the acceptance of candidature, the University at which the successful student is enrolled and The Cancer Council South Australia will agree to negotiate assignment of any intellectual property (according to university policies governing student intellectual property) arising out of the research degree or contained in any research report submitted to it under this agreement. 18. The Cancer Council South Australia will not support individuals or institutions that receive support directly or indirectly from, or are involved with organisations that are part of or funded by, the tobacco industry.
