Sun protection at school
Sun exposure in the first 10 years of life has a significant impact on the lifetime risk of developing skin cancer. Ensuring children are well protected from the sun in early childhood care and education settings is a major priority for the SunSmart Program.
When the UV radiation level is 3 or above it is strong enough to damage unprotected skin. In South Australia UV levels are 3 and above every day from the beginning of September until the end of April making this the most important time for skin protection.
The Cancer Council offers child care centres, kindergartens, preschools and primary schools the opportunity to be recognised as SunSmart sites. To become a SunSmart site, early childhood centres and schools must adhere to comprehensive policies and procedures.
The SunSmart Centres and SunSmart Schools programs are available free of charge to early childhood centres and primary schools throughout the state.
Teaching resources cand SunSmart policy resources can be found at the School zone.
