Southern Yorke Peninsula

By Deborah Ahwan

In November 2003, one 13 year old boy, Todd Warren, wanted to shave his head in support of a friend who was undergoing treatment. That was the birth of the SYP Branch of The Cancer Council.

We now have a core group of 15 enthusiastic members, with a larger circle of helpers who give extra support whenever asked. Many of our members are themselves cancer survivors.

Our meetings are held on the first Monday of each month. As members come from different towns, we accommodate everyone by rotating the monthly meetings to those various towns, where we join for a meal at the hotel before the business starts at 7.30pm

In the three years to November 2006, our branch has raised in excess of $33,000. We have donated equipment and goods to our local hospital, health and palliative care services to aid in the care and comfort of anyone using those facilities, whatever their illness.

Our functions have included head shaves, a La Viva La Drag stage show (female impressionists), an auction, dinner featuring Elvis (tribute artist), raffles, catering and regular sausage sizzles at the local caravan parks.  The 2005 and 2007 Relay for Life held at Yorketown raised an additional $81,400 for cancer research.
