Peter Nelson Leukaemia Research Fellowship Fund

"... fighting the battle against leukaemia (in memory of the Australian Olympic cyclist, Peter Nelson)."

Marjorie Jackson-Nelson, The Lithgow Flash

The Peter Nelson Leukaemia Research Fellowship Fund was established through the efforts of Marjorie Jackson-Nelson AC, CVO, MBE. They called her the Lithgow Flash, the fastest woman in the world. In her brief but glorious career as world champion, she brought nine gold medals home for Australia.

In 1953 Marjorie married Australian Olympic cyclist, Peter Nelson and settled down on a small almond orchard near McLaren Vale and raised three children.

In 1975 Peter was struck down with leukaemia and after a very short time it took his life. Marjorie emerged from retirement to raise money for research in a battle to beat the disease. Marjorie enlisted the aid of Rotary to establish the fund and has tirelessly worked for it ever since.

About Leukaemia

Leukaemia is a disease of the blood forming organs. It is regarded as a form of cancer because it causes cells in the two most important blood-forming organs, the bone marrow and lymph glands, to grow in an uncontrolled way. Eventually this uncontrolled growth affects the blood itself.

The cause of leukaemia, like that of many other forms of cancer is still not clearly known.

Modern forms of treatment are producing remissions, i.e. return to normal life. Approximately 70-90% of patients, depending on the type of leukaemia, achieve remission and a significant number are actually cured and do not have any relapse of the leukaemia at a later date.

The aim of the fund

Has been to support researchers early in their career in an accredited research department to enable them to obtain further independent funding at the conclusion of their Fellowship.

Why Marjorie needs your help

The Peter Nelson Leukaemia Fund neither seeks nor receives any Government funding. Marjorie Jackson-Nelson's personal time and efforts have raised all the funds so far, with the generous support of Rotary and other groups, companies and individuals who respond to the calls for help.

More money means more research and thus an earlier end to the disease. Your help can bring this about and hasten the day when leukaemia joins the list of once-fatal diseases that medical science has conquered.

Marjorie and her completely volunteer staff need to raise $200,000 a year to fund the vital research necessary to combat this disease. Will you help?

How you can help

Memorial Gifts at the death of a loved one or on their anniversaries or Honour Gifts on special occasions such as birthday, weddings, Christmas, etc make a thoughtful alternative to floral tributes or personal presents. We will send a special acknowledgement of the gift (but not the amount) to whomever you nominate.

Planned giving

A legacy in your will is a wonderful way to create a continuous source of support, or take a major step to help leukaemia research. Gifts can range from specific amounts up to full or "remainder of" estates. Consult a Trustee company or Solicitor when making your will.

There are also other planned giving methods. Please contact us for more information.

Special Events

A great way to help and make our cause better known is to hold authorised special events to raise money for our research work.

Individuals or groups of friends have conducted:

  • dinner dance
  • wine bottling
  • street stalls
  • concerts
  • raffles
  • fun runs
  • and more

Please let us know if you would like to help us in this way. (You need to have our authority to use the Fund's name.)
