Relaxation

Relaxation is when you can turn off what’s happening in the world around you, so that your mind and body are at rest. There are various techniques that are used to relax your muscles and/or help you deal with anxiety.

They include
Muscle relaxation – following a process or script that progressively relaxes all the muscles in your body.
Guided imagery – using a script where you picture yourself in a peaceful environment.
Visualization – focussing your thoughts on a scene or story that has positive meaning for you
Deep breathing can also be an effective relaxation technique.
Meditation – quieting your mind, sometimes by focussing on your breath.

Most of these techniques will need to be practised regularly before you can feel really comfortable.

Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20 has a range of relaxation resources.
