Role overview

Cancer Council SA’s new integrated cancer building gives every South Australian impacted by cancer every chance to survive their diagnosis. The visionary building combines cancer research, prevention, and support services alongside 120 rooms of supportive accommodation for regional and remote South Australians travelling to Adelaide for cancer treatment.

We are seeking welcoming individuals to join our team as Connection Volunteers who will lead a variety of activities and workshops across our lounge and activity spaces to help improve the connection and interaction of guests while supporting their physical and social wellbeing.

As a Connection Volunteer, in the first instance, you will:

  • Provide a friendly and safe space for our guests to experience some social interaction through conversation and support from staff, volunteers and each other at our weekly morning teas.

To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • Empathy, compassion, and an understanding of people facing a major and distressing illness.
  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to communicate respectfully with people from varied backgrounds.
  • Confidence and ability to work independently with indirect supervision, but also work as part of a team.

Location and time required:

  • This position will be located at 202 Greenhill Road, Eastwood.
  • The hours of this role vary and are part of an organised roster; morning teas are held at a fixed time each week:
    • Tuesday, 10 am to 12 pm
    • Wednesday, 2 pm to 4 pm
    • Thursday, 10 am to 12 pm
  • The position will commence in August, upon completion of the new facility.

Special conditions:

  • The successful volunteer will be a non-smoker.
  • As a part of our recruitment process you may be required to undertake a medical assessment, validate any relevant vaccinations and criminal history checks and/or complete any practical assessment deemed appropriate to the role.
