    Why should I quit?

    People quit for many reasons. Quitting smoking is your decision and everybody has their own reasons. Some common reasons are:

    • the cost of smoking
    • health
    • children and pregnancy
    • fitness
    • workplaces becoming smoke-free
    • regaining control
    • more confidence
    • less stress

    Think about what it would be like if you stopped smoking. What would it be like if you continued smoking?

    Smoking is expensive. Have you thought about the money you’ll save from quitting smoking? What would you spend the extra money on?

    For example, if you smoke a pack of cigarettes a day at $20 per pack, you would spend more than $7,500 per year. Imagine having the extra $7,500 in your pocket, you may find this a good incentive for quitting.

    Quitting at any age will result in major and immediate health benefits. Tobacco smoke is made up of thousands of chemicals, many of them harmful to your health. This is what the tobacco industry is hiding in their cigarettes.

    Smokers are at a higher risk of developing many cancers and diseases including:

    • cancer of the lungs, mouth, nose, throat, oesophagus, pancreas, kidney, liver, bladder, bowel, ovary, cervix, bone marrow and stomach
    • heart disease, heart attack and stroke
    • lung diseases such as emphysema and bronchitis
    • poor blood circulation in feet and hands
    • diabetes.

    The good news is that when you stop smoking your body starts to repair itself.


    Smoking makes it harder to get enough oxygen to your muscles during exercise so you tire more quickly or can’t get your breath. When you quit, your body works more effectively and in time physical activity will become easier. 

    Regaining control

    Many smokers come to realise that they are addicted and not really choosing to smoke. Regaining control is empowering.

    Smoking and pregnancy

    Quitting smoking when you’re pregnant will help you feel good and give your baby a better start in life. It’s best to quit smoking before conception, however quitting at any time during your pregnancy improves the chances of having a healthy baby. It’s never too late to quit.

    Quitting smoking is likely to improve your baby’s growth, birth weight and long-term health. Protecting babies and children from second-hand smoke reduces the risk of SIDS, asthma, respiratory illness, middle ear disease (glue ear) and poor lung development.
