Smoking is the single largest cause of preventable death and disease in our community.

Cancer Council SA 13.5% of adults are current smokers

Cancer Council SA 2.4% of school students are current smokers

When we look at smoking rates among disadvantaged groups living in South Australia, it’s clear that smoking is a social justice issue.

Cancer Council SA 25.8% of people with a severe mental illness smoke

Cancer Council SA 40.4% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people smoke

65.5% of South Australians have been exposed to passive smoking at building entrances and outdoor seating at hotels/bars.

We are also concerned about the large number of South Australians still reporting exposure to second-hand smoke, which is why we continue to lobby for legislation changes and more smoke-free environments.
