On Friday, 19 January hundreds of cyclists will commit to Ride for a reason in the Santos Tour Down Under Bupa Challenge Tour.
Established in 2009, Ride for a reason is a fundraising-focused ride where cyclists participating in the Santos Tour Down Under’s Bupa Challenge Tour can ride the same course as the professionals while raising critical funds for Cancer Council SA.
Since it started, Ride for a reason has raised more than $4 million which has helped to fund Cancer Council SA’s ground-breaking research, accommodation and support services, advocacy programs and live-saving prevention initiatives.
Through Ride for a reason, cyclists are given the opportunity to dedicate their ride to a loved one who has been impacted by cancer, which currently takes the lives of over 3,500 South Australians every year.
You don’t have to be a professional cyclist to make your ride count, with four starting locations providing various challenges for riders of every ability.
Cancer Council SA Chief Executive, Lincoln Size, has been riding for a reason for the past three years. He explains how, through the money raised, Cancer Council SA is able to continue to support thousands of South Australians diagnosed with cancer every year.
“Every day, 26 South Australians are told the devastating news…you have cancer. That equates to over 9,700 South Australians every year. It’s a confronting statistic, and one that we are committed to changing.”
“Through the support of the local community, we have raised an impressive $4million through the Ride for a reason, which allows us to continue to provide essential support services to those diagnosed by cancer and their families through every stage of their cancer journey.”
“The money raised also allows us to fund research through the Cancer Council Beat Cancer Project, the single largest source of funding for cancer research and infrastructure within the state.”
“We still have a long way to go towards our ultimate goal of a cancer free future, but through events such as Ride for a reason, we are taking small steps every day to achieve it.”
Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2018, Ride for a reason is free to sign up for anyone who registers for the Bupa Challenge Tour and will take place on Friday, 19 January 2018.
As a part of the Ride for a reason participants will have exclusive access to training rides and tips, expert fundraising support and the opportunity to win amazing weekly prizes, along with an exclusive Ride for a reason Santini kit for each fundraising milestone reached.
Registrations for the 2018 Ride for a reason event are now open and registrants can enter via the Bupa Challenge Tour event which can be found at www.tourdownunder.com.au.
