The emerging concept that tumour cells re-wire their energy production and can adapt this to survive under stress has raised the question of how best to therapeutically target metabolism of cancer cells. We show that a specific AML subtype lacks this adaption capacity (metabolic plasticity) and is vulnerable to treatment with a new class of drugs that target metabolism. We will test these drugs in animal models of AML and investigate strategies to optimise the response to metabolic therapy.
