Each and every year, thousands of South Australians just like Lois Bayre continue to gather together and host a Cancer Council Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea to honour someone special and raise funds to help bring a future free from cancer closer. Here is Lois and her story — let her inspire you to make a cuppa for a cause this year.

For the past 20 years, Lois has been hosting a Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea in her hometown of Mount Gambier for a very special reason—for her mum.

“I lost my dear mum to cancer in 1975. It was a huge loss as she was such a special person. After mum passed away, I started donating small amounts to Cancer Council SA every year. Then one year, I received some information about Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea and thought ‘this could be fun’.”

20 years later, around these parts, Lois’s event is known as ‘Mount Gambier’s Biggest Morning Tea’ and has become a yearly celebration for more than 300 people in her close-knit community, as they gather together each and every year to have a cuppa for a cause and support Cancer Council SA.

“Over the years, my morning tea has raised $141,158 and is helping to make sure no one has to lose a loved one to cancer like I did.

“By raising money for cancer research, detection and support services, I hope to help other families to save their mums, their dads, their brothers and their sisters. For me, that makes it all worth it.

“I still love doing it every year because I know that we are saving lives and I hope that one day, we will beat this dreadful disease.”

This year, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea needs the support of the South Australian community more than ever before, after the impact coronavirus had on the event in 2020.

“I would be so grateful to be hosting alongside other passionate people, who, by holding an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, will also help put a stop to cancer.

“Last year was a challenge for all of us, and fundraising events like Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea certainly felt the impact, which is why I hope that this year, we can all come together to make this year bigger and better than before.

“So please, register to host an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea alongside me in 2021 and help bring a future free from cancer, closer. It’s never too late to get together!

“I hope you’ll join us this year for your own special reason, whatever it may be. Together we can put a stop to cancer, one cuppa at a time.”

The official date to host an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is Thursday 27 May, but you can host any time in May or June and you can host your way.
