For retirement village resident Jan Clements, hosting a Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is not only about getting together with her local community, it’s about making a difference in honour of those close to her who have been affected by cancer.

Jan has lived in the retirement village for the past 13 years and has been inspired to host a Biggest Morning Tea for the past four years. This year she has worked hard to add some fun and fresh ideas to the event that she says she is very much looking forward to.

“I’ve been inspired by friends I’ve watched go through this awful disease. From a four-year-old child to my dear friend’s 40-year-old daughter and people within my village who have spurred me on to support this once-a-year event,” she says.

“Lots of people in the village have felt the impact of cancer like me which is why we all enjoy this as a fun day to get together and make a difference.

“We’ve been busy coming up with other ideas that will encourage folk to come have fun and support Cancer Council to find a cure sooner rather than later.”
Jan says they will be doing “all sorts of fun things” on the day.

“Management of Living Choice are supplying a gorgeous gift basket to raffle, I have a good supply of treasure for a market stall—always popular, our local MP will be popping in and providing a gift basket, and we are also working on using the initials of the Biggest Morning Tea to get residents to dress up!” she says.

“I did also go to some of the small businesses in the area to ask for their support with our auction, despite the fact many are doing it tough after the past year. Everyone has been terribly generous and had lots of responses and lovely things.

“One guy is shaving his moustache so the butcher will donate $100!

“It’s going to be a fun day.”

Jan is hosting her Biggest Morning Tea on the official day, Thursday May 27, and hopes it will be just as successful as in the past.

“I have spent hundreds and thousands of hours making this event possible and I’m really looking forward to it,” she says.

“If anyone is thinking about hosting, do it!

“A Biggest Morning Tea is a great excuse to have fun and raise funds for Cancer Council.”
