David and Barrie are both very dedicated volunteers for Cancer Council SA after surviving cancer themselves. Recently, they decided they wanted to do even more to support others going through a cancer diagnosis, by holding an art exhibition which raised an incredible $900 for our Transport to Treatment service here at Greenhill Lodge.
David began volunteering with Cancer Council SA as a Transport to Treatment bus driver over four years ago. He had just finished treatment for stage 4 melanoma and thought that since he had been so well looked after, he wanted to do what he could to give back. Two years ago, he also joined our Cancer Connect team, providing telephone peer support to others going through treatment for skin cancer.
Barrie’s first connection to Cancer Council SA was when he stayed at our former Flinders Lodge accommodation while undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. This experience motivated Barrie to give back and become a Cancer Council SA volunteer. Since 2019, his volunteer roles have included calling donors to thank them for their generous donations and supporting our Greenhill Lodge guests as a Concierge.
Getting involved in local art groups, both David and Barrie started painting as a hobby. The idea for the exhibition came about because David had so many paintings around the house, that he’d run out of walls to hang them on. So, he thought, why not sell them and raise funds for Cancer Council SA. When Barrie heard about the idea, he offered to donate some of his own paintings.
The paintings were displayed in our guest lounge at Greenhill Lodge for two weeks and in that time the pair sold 11 beautiful paintings raising almost $900 for our services for regional South Australians impacted by cancer.
There are still a small number of paintings available to purchase at Greenhill Lodge, with all funds raised going to Cancer Council SA.
