Financial assistance

A small grant towards specific household accounts may be available, through our Financial Services Program, to assist South Australian residents who are experiencing significant financial hardship due to a cancer diagnosis.

Please review eligibility guidelines below and if applicable, complete the Financial Services Program Referral form for your client.  Email the completed form with an eligible household account to financialassistance@cancersa.org.au.

Cancer Council connects people impacted by cancer with volunteer professionals who provide advice and assistance to patients and their carers - including lawyers and financial advisors.

Cancer Council’s Legal and Financial Referral Services may be able to help cancer patients, carers and bereaved carers who are experiencing cancer-related financial challenges and are unable to afford professional advice.

Financial eligibility criteria
Our referral services are means-tested, and patients and carers will be asked financial questions about:

  • employment status
  • household income
  • housing situation and dependents
  • assets and debts.

Legal Referral Service
We can connect eligible patients and carers with lawyers for advice regarding:

  • simple Wills, Power of Attorney and Enduring Guardian documents (patients only)
  • employment and discrimination matters
  • superannuation and insurance disputes
  • credit and debt matters.

Financial Planning Referral Service
We can connect eligible patients and carers with financial advisors for advice regarding:

  • early access to superannuation
  • insurance claims (e.g. income protection, TPD and life insurance)
  • help with Centrelink
  • asset and debt management options
  • retirement and estate planning.

If an individual is not eligible or requires assistance outside the scope of Cancer Council's Legal and Financial Referral Services, they will be contacted and provided details of a volunteer professional who can assist on a paid basis or another free service.

Referring a patient to Cancer Council SA's Greenhill Lodge accommodation

Greenhill Lodge provides a home away from home for regional South Australians who need to travel to Adelaide for treatment and cancer-related appointments.

Priority is given to people undergoing cancer treatment, who live over 100 kilometres from Adelaide. Guests with other medical appointments are welcome to stay, subject to availability. Other eligibility requirements include:

  • Notice period: Where possible a minimum of 48 hours' notice is required for bookings to ensure we can adequately prepare for each guest's arrival.
  • Referral form: A completed referral form must be completed by a health professional (while we still accept short notice referrals, we require key information before booking confirmation).
  • Guest requirements: Guests must be able to care for their physical needs independently, including shopping, cooking and travel (evening meals are available from our dining room at a subsidised rate on weekdays, and limited transport to treatment is offered to guests).
  • Carer requirements: If guests are unable to care for themselves, they must be accompanied by a carer. If care needs are too high, our services may not be suitable.
  • Social Worker assessment: Our Social Workers will review mobility, daily living needs, and independence levels before confirming bookings. Any concerns will be explored further to ensure the best outcome for our guests.
  • Hospitalisation review: Guests returning from hospital with changed care needs or medical conditions should be assessed by our Social Workers to determine if it is appropriate for them to return to Greenhill Lodge.

For more information about eligibility to stay at Greenhill Lodge, please contact Reception on 08 8291 4200 or stay@cancersa.org.au.

To ensure every guest receives the best possible care and support they need during their stay, please complete the below referral form and confirm the booking. Completed referral forms can be forwarded to stay@cancersa.org.au
