Cancer Council SA’s Dermoscopy Program aims to equip South Australian general practitioners (GPs), particularly those in areas with the highest rates of skin cancer and regional areas, with skills and knowledge to help detect and treat skin cancer early.
As part of the program, GPs who have completed approved dermoscopy training are invited to apply for a grant, with successful applicants awarded a dermatoscope – a specialised hand-held magnifying device to help find skin cancer early.
Thanks to the generous support of the South Australian community and funding from Preventive Health SA, 235 South Australian GPs have been awarded a dermatoscope through the grant.
The dermatoscope helps us to take a closer look at spots that may be of concern. Something that may look concerning to the naked eye, can be totally benign when we see it under the dermatoscope. On the other hand, we can catch dangerous spots early while they’re still small and haven’t spread.

Finding skin cancer early gives you the best chance of successful treatment. Getting to know your skin and regularly self-checking your body for signs of change is so important to ensure you find skin cancer early when it is easier to treat. If you notice any new spots or changes to your skin, see your doctor as soon as possible.
Skin cancer
This information has been prepared to help you understand more about the 2 most common types of skin cancer – basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). These skin cancers are called non-melanoma skin cancer or keratinocyte cancer.
