Legal and financial assistance

Cancer and its treatment can present significant financial challenges. Possible loss of income while finding time for appointments and treatments, while facing medical bills and additional travel costs can all take a toll during what is already a challenging time.

Support for people experiencing financial challenges because of cancer

Cancer Council SA’s Financial Services Program provides support to individuals with a diagnosis of cancer which is impacting on their financial situation and capacity to pay household bills.

A small grant towards an unpaid household bill may be available to assist people who are experiencing financial hardship due to a cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Eligibility is assessed on an individual basis through a social worker or health professional at your treatment centre.

How to access Cancer Council SA’s Financial Services Program

For more information about our Financial Services Program, please talk to your social worker through your treatment centre or call Cancer Council 13 11 20.

If you are not eligible for Cancer Council SA’s Financial Services Program, your social worker or our qualified health professionals on 13 11 20 can also help connect you with our community and government resources that may be able to help.

Cancer Council SA connects South Australians impacted by cancer with volunteer professionals who can provide financial and legal advice and support to people going through cancer treatment and their carers – including lawyers and financial planners.

Referrals to volunteer legal and financial professionals may help cancer patients, carers and bereaved carers experiencing cancer-related financial issues and are unable to afford professional advice.

Cancer Council SA staff do not provide legal or financial advice.

Am I eligible for Cancer Council SA’s financial planning referral service?

To be eligible for a financial planning referral your issue must be connected to, or harder to resolve, due to a cancer diagnosis. Our referral services are means-tested, and people living with cancer and carers will be asked financial questions about:

  • employment status
  • household income
  • housing situation and dependents
  • assets and debts.

To find out if you are eligible for Cancer Council SA Financial Referral Service, get in touch with a social worker at your treatment centre or call Cancer Council SA on 13 11 20.
