It is illegal to sell e-cigarettes that contain nicotine without a prescription, but we know that thousands are sold every day in a variety of retailers across South Australia.
The state government is imposing tougher license conditions requiring retailers to show proof that vaping products being sold are nicotine-free. They are also conducting a compliance blitz.
Cancer Council SA Prevention and Advocacy Manager Christine Morris said that Cancer Council SA welcomes today’s announcement protecting young people from the harms of e-cigarettes.
“Cancer Council has been concerned about the increased use of e-cigarettes among young people and children, and we’re pleased that the State Government is taking action to crackdown on sales of nicotine vaping products,” she said.
“We know that young people who vape are around three times more likely to take up traditional smoking than non-vapers so we welcome stronger action to protect young South Australians from nicotine addiction. The only thing that should go in our lungs is air.”
“There are over 200 chemicals in e-cigarettes, which are linked to detrimental health impacts so it’s really encouraging to see the government take tangible action.”
“We also hope this blitz puts retailers on notice, as they play an important role in stopping this looming health crisis.”
